Run For Trails 2022
The Run for Trails 2022 features the theme: "Tumakbo para sa kalikasan; Bumoto para sa kinabukasan" (Run for the environment; Vote for our future).
This encourages participants to mobilize for the environmental issues that are most meaningful to them, such as public green spaces, sustainable transport, access to clean water, or climate justice, among others.
As the event is also scheduled during the lead-up to the Philippines’ upcoming national and local elections, it also provides an opportunity to advocate for the importance of good environmental governance that takes into account the rights of both people and planet.
The proceeds from the Run for Trails 2022 will be donated to communities affected by Typhoon Rai (Odette) in Bohol, Philippines.
About Run for Trails 2022
The UP Baguio Mountaineers (UPBM) is an accredited organization at the University of the Philippines – Baguio. It has grown to more than one hundred members and alumni, who remain in contact and who aspire to continue to practice the organization’s principles.
Since 2002, UPBM has organized in-person trail running events to call for safe and publicly accessible green spaces, and raise awareness on their importance for health and well-being. Although these activities have been postponed by the pandemic, a virtual run is a viable alternative that can continue to highlight the need to conserve and restore the natural environment.
In December 2021, super typhoon Rai (local name Odette) devastated provinces in Visayas and Mindanao in the Philippines. Based on the latest figures, damage to public infrastructure from this typhoon amounted to approximately Php 17, in addition to more than 300,000 persons displaced and in need of basic social services.
Extreme weather events such as super typhoon Rai demonstrate the ecological and social crises that we currently face. Rising global temperatures will see extreme weather events increase in intensity and frequency, with immediate adverse impacts – especially on vulnerable sectors. Slow onset events, coupled with widespread land use change and biodiversity loss, likewise endanger the ecosystems that provide valuable services to human communities.
This rationale is reflected in the virtual run’s two objectives, as follows:
Raise funds – UPBM has partnered with Quench Sea, an international start-up company that has developed portable devices that can desalinate seawater into freshwater, using manual human power. The proceeds from the Run for Trails 2022 will support the purchase of these devices and their distribution to communities in Bohol, Philippines.
Raise awareness – The Run for Trails 2022 features the theme: "Tumakbo para sa kalikasan; Bumoto para sa kinabukasan" (Run for the environment; Vote for our future). This encourages participants to mobilize for the environmental issues that are most meaningful to them, such as public green spaces, sustainable transport, access to clean water, or climate justice, among others.
The activity can also provide a platform for bringing these calls to action to the attention of national and local candidates, while adding to the broader advocacy of sustainable programs and policies and judicious environmental governance.
